I don't have many childhood memories of Joan, but one thing I do remember is her going in to the army and that she had a brenn gun. She sent me some of her target practice sheets which had holes all around the central spot. Not sure what happened to those! She was a good shot and even won a medal for her shooting skills.
Although she had moved away, she never missed mine and Stephen's birthdays. She always sent us Christmas presents, usually a scarf and gloves, and birthday presents. One year she sent me a book for my birthday about horsedrawn vehicles. I loved it and really treasured it.

From your loving son Paul,
When I think of mum I'm reminded of the poem "How do I love thee let me count the ways?" Mum, you taught me to love myself and everyone, you taught me right from wrong, you were my carer when I was ill, you picked me up when I fell, you encouraged me to pursue my dreams, you gave me my faith and a family that loves me, your love is the summit I will always try to reach, you have always been and will always be with me to that end, love is too small a word to express what you have given an what you mean to me x
